History

The word Chiropractic comes from the Greek words cheir meaning "hand" and prakticos meaning "done" or Done by Hand. This came from the inventor of Chiropractic: Daniel David Palmer, or 'DD' as he is known among chiropractors.

ddpalmer_002.jpgDaniel Palmer was born in Canada in 1845 and moved to Iowa in 1865 at the tender age of 20. He was recognized as an entrepreneurial figure and after a 20-year career as a successful horticulturist, he turned his interests to natural healing. Within four years his magnetic healing practice had made him a financial success.

He read and absorbed all things scientific, and from this knowledge, DD realized that although various forms of physical manipulation had been used for hundreds of years, no one had put together a comprehensive and scientific rationale to explain the effects of this manipulation. His major contribution to the health field was the categorizing of the art, science and philosophy of chiropractic, based on a methodical study in anatomy and physiology.

The First Documented Adjustment

From the historical documentation surrounding his contribution, DD performed the initial chiropractic adjustment in September 1895 and later in The Chiropractor's Adjustment he penned the following account of that session:

"Harvey Lillard, a janitor in the Ryan Block, where I had my office, had been so deaf for 17 years that he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch. I made enquiry as to the cause of his deafness and was informed that when he was exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give in his back and immediately became deaf.

An examination showed a vertebra racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if the vertebra was replaced, the man's hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half hour talk persuaded Mr Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon the man could hear as before.

There was nothing "accidental" about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained. There was nothing "crude" about this adjustment; it was specific, so much so that no chiropractor has equalled it."

In 1898, DD started the Palmer School and Infirmary of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa where it remains to this day. His son, Bartlett Joshua Palmer (BJ) took over the school in 1906, developed the world famous Palmer College of Chiropractic, and continued developing the art, science and philosophy of the chiropractic profession. DD Palmer died October 20, 1913, in Los Angeles, California, just 18 years after giving Harvey Lillard the first chiropractic adjustment.

Fast Forward

Today, chiropractic is the largest natural healing profession in the world. Most people know chiropractic can help headaches, neck, arm, back, and leg pain, but recent scientific studies have shown chiropractic can usually help recurrent middle ear infections, PMS, painful periods, the birth process, hiatal hernia, hypertension, cardiovascular conditions, attention deficit disorder, infantile colic, bed wetting, hyperactivity, TMJ, sciatic pain, and many other conditions. While a few people still don't believe in chiropractic, hundreds of recent scientific studies prove what chiropractic patients have known for over 100 years: Chiropractic works! It helps sick people to get well and to stay well.

Since Palmer College opened, chiropractic has developed rapidly and there are now over 35 schools and colleges around the world and on every continent.
